Curie was a pioneer in researching radioactivity, winning the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903 and Chemistry in 1911. To control performance, we will learn how to control and measure the structure, process, and properties of new materials. Nobel Prize Winner Scientist Woman Scientist Marie Sklodowska Curie (1867-1934) was a Polish and naturalized-French physicist and chemist. In 1898 Marie Curie and her husband discovered two other naturally occurring, strongly radioactive elements, radium and polonium. The MaRIE logo features the famous "materials tetrahedron," a representation of how structure (both at the atomic and microstructure scales) and process (how materials are made) combine with the properties of the materials to determine performance, the four vertices of the tetrahedron. This seventh of November commemorates the birth of legendary scientist Marie Curie (born Maria Salomea Skodowska) 152 years ago. The discovery of radium and polonium allowed us to define the properties of radioactivity, a term coined by the researcher herself. Given her brilliant work on radioactivity and her immense creativity, we choose to honor her in the name of our proposed facility. She was awarded her first Nobel Prize in Physics together with her husband for their study into the spontaneous radiation discovered by Becquerel, who was awarded the other half of the prize and her second Nobel Prize was in Chemistry, in recognition for her work in radioactivity.
